SERRES (Special Event Responders / Répondants aux événements spéciaux) is a club at the University of Ottawa that provides basic and advanced emergency care at special events around the community.  Club meetings are held weekly during the fall and winter semesters, and biweekly during the summer to keep our first aid skills in full practice.  See our calendar for details.

SERRES was created over a decade ago by students at the University of Ottawa. Members of SERRES complete an application to join Unit 1180 of St. John Ambulance – Federal District Community Services. St. John Ambulance (SJA) is an internationally recognized philanthropic organization which took its first roots over 900 years ago. In 2008, we celebrated the 125th anniversary of SJA in Canada by hosting our annual Mock Disaster on the grounds of Tabaret Hall.

SERRES is mostly composed of students at the University of Ottawa, but members of the community are welcome to join. Members of SERRES are expected to become Medical First Responders (MFRs), Mobile Drivers, and Attendants through training with St. John Ambulance certified instructors. MFRs of SERRES have covered major duties on campus and around Ottawa including: Fedstock (101 week), Homecoming, The Canadian University Women’s Hockey Championships, Polar Bear Dip, Motocross, The EX, Canada Day, HOPE Volleyball, National Remembrance Day ceremonies, etc. Following their university career, several of our alumni have gone on to health care professions and have joined units of SJA across Canada.

In 2008, SERRES became an associate member of the national Association of Campus Emergency Response Teams (ACERT). Members have ample opportunity to participate in ACERT conferences and First Aid competitions in Ontario and Quebec.

SERRES is a recognized club of the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) and all volunteer hours count towards the SASS Co-Curricular record.
